Unhindered hunting of wolves and coyotes won't save our moose
Dear Minister Yakabuski and Premier Ford, I want to express deep concern about your upcoming decision on proposed changes to moose and coyote/wolf hunting regulations. The Ministry's own website explains how increasing wolf hunting isn't likely to boost moose numbers because hunting typically only reduces pack size, which doesn't mean fewer moose are predated. Hunting wolves in large numbers to be able to boost moose is not ecologically or ethically sound. Moreover, the Ministry's own research shows that eastern coyotes don't overlap with moose in the north and therefore do not impact them. That mandatory reporting might be scrapped clearly indicates that the impact of these changes could never be studied—this violates the Strategy for Wolf Conservation in Ontario. Please help moose by tightening hunting regulations, phasing out calf hunting and taking meaningful action to address climate change. You can satisfy hunter concerns by implementing the proposed changes that will increase fairness in the tag draw system. It is irresponsible and unethical to propose changes to wolf and coyote hunting as a means to help our province's moose. Both wolves and coyotes are ecologically and inherently valuable.
