Here are some of the changes just made to our Endangered Species Act:

Pausing or limiting species protections for habitats and for invidual animals/plants at the whim of the Minister, without required consultation with species experts;
Changing the Environmental Bill of Rights to keep the public from being notified or consulted with when those protections are removed;
Allowing the Minister to demand that scientists re-classify species and downgrade their status if they are not at risk outside of Ontario;
Loosening mandated reporting timelines for recovery planning and monitoring;
Making it easier for industry to gain permits or exemptions to destroy habitat and species;
Allowing industry to pay to destroy habitat or species rather than be legally obligated to ensure an overall benefit for the species elsewhere.

I am writing to you to express my concern about the passing of Bill 108, which has effectively paved the way for the Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks to dismantle protection for our most imperiled species. Hiding these changes in a bill ostensibly about housing could not begin to cover up the deep harm that will now be legally allowed at the whim of one Minister. The Progressive Conservative government has just put us one step closer to spiraling extinction crisis.

The Ford government may have stripped our environmental right to take part in the decision-making and cut out as much science as possible to remove accountability when deciding tor allow the destruction of a threatened and endangered species and its habitat, but I will not be silenced, and science will always speak for itself.

Minister Yurek, welcome to your new portfolio as Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks. I urge you to act wisely and cautiously when implementing the new Endangered Species Act; Ontarians understand that their futures depend on a healthy, resilient environment. I will follow this issue closely to make sure that Ontario is not complicit in the world's current biodiversity crisis.
