End Coyote Killing Contests and Bounties

Chesher's Outdoor Store ran a coyote killing contest all through February and now a municipality is trying to disguise an illegal bounty as a "coyote compensation program".

Bounties and contests are obviously barbaric and ecologically harmful, but did you know they are also illegal in Ontario? The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act forbids anyone from hunting for expectation of gain, inducing anyone else to hunt for gain, paying or receiving bounties.

Why then, is the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry letting these activities continue?

Did you know that Ontario's lax hunting and trapping regulations allow unlimited, year-round coyote killing and do not even require hunters to report their kills in Southern Ontario? This open-season area includes some of the threatened Algonquin wolf's range, too.

  • Are you aware that this contest endangers the Algonquin wolf, a threatened species that cannot be told apart from eastern coyotes ...
